WD-40 Company’s VP Finance and Chief Financial Officer plays a crucial role in the company’s today and tomorrow. In summary, you will be responsible for the company’s financial performance tracking and reporting, management of its financial assets, risk management and communications regarding the company’s obligations as a public entity. In partnership with the CEO & Chairman of the Board, you will be accountable to shareholders and other constituencies for protecting and growing the company’s value. Leadership of the tribe and preparation for organizational evolution to meet the company’s long-term objectives will require your unwavering focus. Detailed functions include:
Strategy
- Development of a financial strategy that supports the business strategy, metrics tied to that strategy, and ongoing development and monitoring of internal control systems designed to preserve the company assets and report accurate financial results. Monitors and directs the implementation of strategic business plans.
- Evaluation of economic and political landscapes in order to advise the CEO and the board regarding business decisions affected by these factors. Act as a thought partner to the commercial leaders.
- As a business partner to the CEO and senior leaders, assist in the analysis, evaluation and performance of the existing business and growth in geographic areas.
Operations
- Management of capital allocation, including capital requests and budgeting processes. Lead annual business planning process to establish financial targets.
- Financial management of subsidiary companies and foreign operations, including developing financial, internal control, tax strategies, risk and budget policies and procedures.
- Development of performance measurement tools based on a mindset of how we can do better than today, by utilizing internal corporate metrics, industry benchmarks, and continual learning. The VP/CFO helps create measurement tools in non-financial and financial areas of the company and teaches people to use them.
- Serve along with the CEO and the Company Secretary as a primary contact and communication link with the board of directors about business results, achievement of goals, progress, proper governance and business understanding.
- Establish, maintain, and monitor internal controls.
Financial Information and Reporting
- Lead the relationship with external auditors and audit committee to ensure all internal controls over financial reporting are effective and sufficient to support the underlying financial statements.
- Responsible for all financial reporting of 10-K and 10-Q filings and periodic 8-K submissions. Works with the finance team and legal department in the preparation, issuance, and filing of quarterly and annual reports and other communications to company leaders, lenders, vendors, shareholders, and financial institutions.
- Direct company compliance with U.S. GAAP, UK GAAP, IFRS, SEC, government, and NASDAQ regulations as they are applicable. Reviews and approves accounting and reporting procedures in subsidiary entities.
- Along with commercial leaders, accountable for ensuring that the Company’s EBITDA is maximized to achieve a high rate of return on investments and comparatively superior return to shareholders.
Investor Relations
Along with CEO, represents the company in investor outreach, communications, shareholder relations, investor engagement and responsiveness, within the context of public company regulatory frameworks. Represents the company’s financial performance at the annual meeting of shareholders.
I.T.
Ensures that global finance and accounting functional requirements are satisfied by supporting IT systems and tools employed in the regions, and participates in strategic planning, steering committees, etc. to provide direct input to decisions that result in the selection and adoption of important IT tools.
Risk Management
- Oversees global risk management portfolio to ensure that the company adequately assesses and manages risk, according to the risk domains identified by the company and tracked by those accountable.
- Participates in the Issue Response Plan as this process may be activated by the CEO from time to time.
Acquisitions
Leads the financial evaluation of all explorations related to acquisition of assets, including real property, intellectual property, products, companies and/or other assets. Ensures that the due diligence processes which may be applied are thorough and comprehensive.

What You’ll Bring To The Role
What You’ll Bring to the Role
- To attain the competencies required, it is likely that you will have 20+ years of progressively. responsible relevant finance and accounting experience, with ten or more years within a public company, partnering with executive teams leading both finance and accounting. Able to look ahead and partner with other functional experts in the advancement of the company’s capabilities.
- 5+ years as CFO in a mid-cap global public company, or larger.
- Demonstrated ability to lead complex accounting and finance functions while developing technical and leadership capabilities with teams. Demonstrated ability to lead cross-functional teams related to systems, IT infrastructure and/or business process improvement.
- Deep knowledge of financial reporting, corporate finance, strategic planning, business development and international business, mergers and acquisitions, etc.
- Advanced knowledge of global financial reporting standards for public companies and the regulatory requirements of FASB, NASDAQ, the SEC, case law, international standards and various public company regulations.
- Thorough understanding of international tax standards, foreign exchange dynamics and global economic factors.
- Demonstrated experience in acquisitions, divestitures, banking relationships and treasury.
- Broad knowledge of contract law and contract oversight, when to partner with legal functions and how to participate in legal disputes.
- Expert resource on governance and compliance in the public company environment.
- Able to understand developments in technology, systems, and applications sufficiently to participate in decisions related to applying those tools in advancing the needs of the functions involved. Demonstrates intellectual curiosity around new and developing technologies that may be applicable.
- Current or prior CPA. Demonstrated technical knowledge related to public accounting practices and policies equivalent to CPA level required.
- Master’s degree in accounting or business administration, preferred. MBA also preferred.
