The Packaging Engineer in this role is responsible for the life cycle management of the material and structural aspects of primary and secondary packaging across all existing, promotional, and future product configurations. They focus on secondary packaging while managing primary projects as business needs require. They will perform as the packaging expert and technical leader in design, development, evaluation, testing, and cost-saving initiatives. In addition, they will provide technical direction and project leadership in the integration and execution of materials, equipment, processes, and quality to ensure delivery of functional secondary packaging format (RSC or displays) to the marketplace.
This position also has product design responsibility for interpreting, organizing, executing, and coordinating projects within corporate guidelines and environmental and regulatory mandatories.
This role offers the flexibility of working of a hybrid schedule if based in San Diego or fully remote if you live outside of San Diego.
What You’ll Be Doing
- Leads the secondary packaging concept development to address consumer packaging needs and marketplace requirements. Performs as the secondary packaging expert and technical leader with external and internal cross-multifunctional teams (Sales, Marketing, Supply Chain, Quality, R&D, and suppliers) to commercialize new and improved existing packaging. Develops concepts, refines designs, and executes packaging systems for the consumer and professional markets.
- Leads the primary packaging projects for products that are "post-launch" and in the commercialization stage. Leads the troubleshooting efforts to identify issues and propose solutions based on primary packaging engineering principles.
- Investigates new and emerging primary and secondary packaging trends and technologies for possible application with the company's present and future products.
- Designs for manufacturability.
- Drive and identify cost-saving projects throughout the optimization of primary and secondary packaging designs.
- Follows the strategic sourcing process for new secondary packaging designs.
- Identifies the need, develop packaging merchandising vehicle, selects suppliers, develops costs estimates, and negotiates final costing, and presents recommendations to Director of Procurement, Marketing and Sales for consideration.
- Identifies and selects the appropriate testing/verification (ASTM/ISTA) of primary and secondary packaging during the design phase and provides technical direction to build tactical plans related to the product's commercialization.
- Creates technical specifications for primary and secondary packaging components that encompass structural and creative design and finished goods specifications (assembly and shipping/storage specifications) that meet current production and regulatory requirements for all manufacturing/distribution partners.
- Directs, monitors, and approves suppliers and contractors that are designing, developing, and producing primary and secondary packaging.
- Researches and evaluates materials and components to develop cost-effective, high-quality packaging.
- Collaborates with Sourcing and Contract Specialist in the RFI/RFP process as needed.
- Identifies novel packaging concepts to satisfy unmet customer/consumer needs.
- Performs feasibility testing and research to determine commercialization potential.
- Resolves manufacturing problems relating to secondary packaging components, supplies or equipment. Provides recommendations in package improvement including transportation and storage efficiencies. Develops prototypes to demonstrate concepts to present to Sales/Marketing team for review.
What You’ll Bring To The Role
- 2-4+ years of experience in secondary and/or tertiary CPG packaging development with experience to manufacturing, trial production, and package testing
- Advanced knowledge on ArtiosCAD, TOPS, CAPE, and other related packaging software
- Ability to independently design and develop primary/secondary/tertiary packaging configurations that meet consumer, brand, quality, and manufacturing objectives
- Detailed oriented and capable to create packaging specifications to maintain product life cycle management.
- Experienced with consumer goods ship test methodologies for distribution environment. Knowledge of packaging validation methods and testing (ASTM/ISTA)
- Ability to troubleshoot packaging related issues and propose solutions based on packaging engineering principles and practicality
- Experience managing primary packaging projects that are in post commercialization stage
- Demonstrated experience managing multiple projects in a matrix-management organizational structure
- Demonstrated ability to form strong cross-functional and cross-regional relationships, both internal and external, with expertise in communication using all media forms
- Bachelor’s degree in Packaging, Mechanical or Materials Engineering; Master’s degree in Packaging Science highly desirable
- Able to travel up to 20% as business needs arise
Total Rewards
$94600 – $128800 / year includes base salary plus 10% - 15% profit-sharing contribution to your retirement account. Salary is determined by multiple factors including but not limited to relevant experience, knowledge, skills, other job-related qualifications, and alignment with market data
